Total Recall: Mastering the Art of Calling Your Dog Back with Fun and Pizzazz

Are you ready to transform your pup into a recall rockstar? Today, we're diving into the wonderful world of recall training. Whether you're calling your dog back from a squirrel chase or just getting them to come in from the backyard, we've got the tips, tricks, and games to make recall training a blast for both you and your furry friend. Let's get started on your dog's journey to becoming a recall superstar!

1. The Name Game: Making Recall Irresistible

First things first, let's make sure your dog knows their name is the most magical sound in the world. Grab some treats and call your dog's name in a happy, excited tone. When they look at you, give them a treat and plenty of praise. Repeat this a few times daily until your dog associates their name with awesome rewards.

2. Hide and Seek: A Classic Game with a Twist

Who doesn't love a good game of hide and seek? This game is not only fun but also fantastic for recall training. Start by having someone hold your dog while you hide in a different room or behind a tree in the yard. Call your dog's name and shout "Come!" When they find you, shower them with treats and praise. This game teaches your dog to seek you out and reinforces that coming to you is always rewarding.

3. Tag, You're It! Turning Recall into a Game

Dogs love a good game of tag, and it's a perfect way to practice recall. Start by calling your dog to you, and when they get close, run away (not too fast!) in the opposite direction. As they chase you, stop and call them again. When they catch up, give them a treat and lots of affection. This game not only reinforces recall but also adds an element of fun and excitement.

*DO NOT PLAY the “I’m going to get you” game where YOU chase your dog. This teaches your dog that it is fun to run AWAY from you! Reverse it, and make them chase you instead.

4. The Long Line: Giving Your Dog Some Freedom

A long line (a leash that's 15-30 feet long) is a fantastic tool for recall training. It allows your dog to explore while still giving you control. Let your dog wander and then call them back to you. If they don't come right away, gently reel them in with the long line while encouraging them with a happy tone. When they reach you, reward them generously. This helps your dog learn that coming back to you doesn't mean the end of fun.

5. Recall Circuits: A Fun Training Routine

Why not turn recall training into a mini obstacle course? Set up a few stations in your yard or a park, such as a tunnel, some cones to weave through, and a jump. Call your dog to you, have them perform a fun task at each station, and then call them to the next one. This keeps things interesting and helps your dog associate recall with a variety of fun activities.

6. High-Value Rewards: Making Recall Irresistible

Let's talk treats. For recall training, you want to use the highest-value rewards you can find. Think of small pieces of cooked chicken, cheese, or special dog treats that your pup goes crazy for. The better the reward, the more likely your dog will come running when you call.

*Tip-Sprinkling parmesan cheese in your treat pouch will add some value to the treats!

7. The Double-Recall Technique: Reinforcing the Command

Sometimes, dogs can get a little distracted. The double-recall technique helps reinforce the command. Call your dog, and if they don't come immediately, take a step back, make a noise to get their attention, and call them again. When they finally come to you, reward them with a jackpot of treats and lots of praise. This teaches your dog that even if they don't come right away, it's still worth it to respond to your call.

8. Recall Practice Parties: Social and Fun

Organize a recall practice party with friends who have well-behaved dogs. Take turns calling each other's dogs, rewarding them with treats and praise when they respond. This not only makes recall training more social and fun but also helps your dog learn to respond to different people.

9. Patience and Consistency: The Key to Success

Remember, recall training takes time and patience. Consistency is key, so practice regularly and always reward your dog for coming to you, even if it takes a little longer than you'd like. With patience and persistence, your dog will become a recall champion.

IMPORTANT! When you call your dog to you, make sure you say “YESSS!” the second they come. If you call your dog over and then you ask them for a sit and then say yes, you are rewarding the sit, not the recall. Always always always mark (Yesss!) the recall, the word "yes" is more important than the delivery of the treats.

10. Celebrate Success: Make It a Big Deal

When your dog nails a recall, celebrate like they've just won the lottery. Jump up and down, clap your hands, and give them a treat party. The more you celebrate, the more your dog will understand that coming to you is the best decision ever.

So, there you have it! With these fun and effective tips, tricks, and games, you'll be well on your way to having a dog that comes running to you every time you call. Happy training, and may your recall adventures be filled with wagging tails and lots of smiles!
